About Piccolo Pellicano ( words by Galerie Maria Wettergren ):
Signe Emdal created her Icelandic wool sculpture, Piccolo Pellicano, in her studio residence at Klitgården in Skagen. There is a special light in Skagen, a strong bluish hue, that feels like a combination of strong Mediterranean light and Scandinavian bluish atmosphere.
The studio is right on the North Sea coast, built into the magical landscape with the sounds of waves and birds. Inspired by the shells on the beach, glistening in the sun, coming up and out of the deep water, Piccolo Pellicano is a tribute to the small Danish marine snail, “A Pelicans Foot”.
This snail has a very resistant shell and lives buried deep in the sand, up to 100 meters below the seabed, digging long “breathing tunnels” through the sand to the sur face. Long after the little snail has died, it is still here through its shell, reminding us of eternity and the beauty we can leave behind.
