About Soft & Serene ( words by Bonnie Pierre-Davis at WGSN lifestyle ):
Online networking to IRL collaboration:
This month we caught up with a new collaboration exclusively shared with WGSN for the first time – Rebecca X Emdal. The duo met over Instagram: Signe Emdal sent the initial message, expressing her love for Rebecca Lee’s 3D environments, which express the movement of a material. Rebecca was passionate to work with someone that does something completely different from her practice, and then it began.
The project is a great example of how creatives can work remotely in different countries while still achieving a new business relationship and collection. Signe is a Danish textile artist based in Copenhagen and enjoys exploring new ambiences via travel: this month, she is taking residency in Toronto Islands. Rebecca is a spatial designer and digital artist based in New York and Cape Town.
From the curiosity of combining textile and digital skills, the project took off, with email conversations about their inspirations and goals. From there they started to build: Signe made the textile art design and Rebecca created the digital environments. One of the goals was to emphasise the softness and transparency in the materiality, for which Rebecca thought an exaggerated draping fabric such as a curtain would be ideal. The light and shadow in the environment created a sense of warmth, combined with a soothing colour palette.
“We work well together because we have totally different skills, but also share a love for a certain type of serenity and softness in our separate art practices,” says Signe. This is a crucial element to think about when deciding on collaboration: consider what additional skills you need to design what you have in mind, or who you can work with to complement your work ethic and style.
Signe and Rebecca are now seeking opportunities to continue this project in a real-life setting and invite businesses to get in touch with ideas to explore their project further. Signe says “I feel a completely new sensory level is emerging in the world and people crave serenity, kindness and safe spaces”.
